France PhotoBook, an association of leading French publishers of photography books, is delighted to announce the second edition of the Booksellers’ Photography book prize !
Following the success of the first edition in 2023 this second edition brings together a jury of 15 booksellers from all over France and Belgique, to choose a winning book from among twenty-seven titles published during the year 2023-2024 by member publishers.
The €3,000 prize money will go to the photographer. The publisher of the winning book also receives assistance in promoting the work, by organizing meetings in bookshops. The prize is awarded with the support of the French Ministry of Culture, the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Pollen Diffusion and Saveca-Art & Paper. The jury for this second edition is chaired by writer Marie Darrieussecq.
Le jury a désigné fin septembre cinq livres finalistes examinés lors de la délibération finale.
On 14th October 2024, the jury selected photographer and artist Laure Tiberghien as the award winner. Simply titled Laure Tiberghien, the book is the artist’s first monograph. It brings together a collection of unique prints produced in the darkroom, offering readers an insight into several years of work and experimentation. The jury was impressed not only by Tiberghien’s artistic approach but also by the book’s production and graphic design. The fifteen booksellers and their chair summarised their choice as follows: “A compelling and committed proposition, an illuminating immersion, and a powerful body of photographic work exploring the idea of revelation. We also appreciated the text, which invites close reading and integrates with the images, gradually revealing a poetic quality as the pages unfold. Special mention must also go to the enigmatic cover, which invites the reader to discover what lies within.”
The jury also awarded a special mention to Instants très simples by Claude Batho, published by Contrejour. Over the course of two decades, Batho developed a deeply personal photographic practice. Working within the intimate confines of family life, she patiently pursued her work away from the public eye. Through her lens, the poetry of everyday life emerges in countless forms: the light of late afternoon, a corner of the fireplace, a bored child.
This award brings renewed attention to a photographer whose place in the history of photography deserves greater recognition.
